You’ve probably seen lots of websites asking for permission to use them and talking about Cookies. Most of the reaction is vastly unnecessary, but it is something you should be aware of and should comply with to an extent. The law is aimed at people who capture data about their websites’ users and use it for marketing purposes. i.e. facebook and amazon who tailor their content based on what other websites you have been to.
The website’s we’ve created only use cookies in a possible 2 ways, neither of which are intrusive and therefore don’t need big drastic statements or buttons to click on – all of which are very obtrusive and unnecessary. There is no threat to the user and the law is unlikely to take any notice if you do nothing at all.
Your website will only use cookies for Google Analytics, something nearly all websites use to track who is coming to your website and where they came from and something Google needs to ultimately seek permission for tracking. And for shopping baskets, to remember the content if the user accidentally closes the browser and then comes back to your website a few minutes later.
The only compliance needed is for a statement as follows, you can either add this to your website via the CMS at the bottom of every page – the home page at least and make it stand out a bit, or we can add a link at the bottom of the site and include the text on your disclaimers page.
Option 1 Do It Yourself – Not Shopping Cart
“Please Note: This website uses non intrusive cookies provided by Google Analytics to help us understand our websites visitors.”
Option 2 Do It Yourself – With Shopping Cart
“Please Note: This website uses non intrusive cookies provided by Google Analytics to help us understand our websites visitors. We also use cookies to remember your shopping basket, but not to store any personal details.”
Option 3 Link on Website Footer
“This website uses non intrusive cookies; find out more here.” which will link to your disclaimers page where the necessary paragraph will be placed. There will be a £20 cost for this to be added. This is the best way to integrate the compliance statement onto your website, but there is no pressure for additional cost from yourself.
Please just Contact Us and let me know which way you’re going to add the compliance statement for my records.
